In The Hot Seat with Richard Hacker

Currently Reading….
I’ve got rather eclectic taste. I just finished READY PLAYER ONE by  Ernest Cline, which was a hoot.  He sets the story about thirty years into the future where much of the population plays and lives inside an interactive virtual game world called OASIS. Lot’s of 1980’s and gaming trivia, so if you’re a gaming geek, this is your novel.  Now I’m reading A TASTE FOR DEATH, a P.D. James novel.

Currently Watching….
Well, the Olympics just ended, so that’s an easy one.  I watched some of it on TV the old fashioned way, but enjoyed watching rowing, canoeing, pistol shooting, skeet, and some of the track and field online.  My fav TV drama, which is between seasons right now is Justice based on a story by Elmore Leonard.  And OK, I’ll admit it.  I got hooked by The Glee Project, which is a bunch of über talented young people vying for a role on Glee. What can I say?  I love musicals.

Guilty Pleasure…
Getting on my scooter and taking a long ride along the Sound with the mountains in the distance.  Why am I guilty?  I should be writing!

Best Advice You Ever Got…
I’ll never forget it.  I was about ten years old in the car with my Dad, when out of nowhere he said, “No matter what you do in life, the most important thing is that whatever you do makes you happy.”  I have no idea why he said those words to me in a random act of wisdom, but I’ve always remembered them and they still guide me today.

A Country or Town You’d Like to Visit…
Florence, Italy which is something I’ll be doing with my wife next year.  I love the food and the spirit of Italy, the passion of the place.  When I travel I’m not a “let’s see how many sights I can see in a day” type of person. I like to be in a place, have conversations with the locals, linger over a glass of wine, watch people pass in the street.  Florence strikes me as a place to “be” for awhile.

Highly Recommend You Read This Title…
I’m going to go with the first thing that popped into my head.  It’s a novel by Iain Pears, Instance at the Fingerpost.  He tells his story of a murder, set in 17th century England, from four different first person points of view, each morphing the plot with their unique and often unreliable perspective.  Lovely work.

I’m Shameless Self Promoting…
My new novel, TOXIC RELATIONSHIP available now as an eBook at your favorite online bookstore.  Here’s a quick blurb:

After a murdered partner, a cheating wife and a lost job in Houston, Nick Sibelius sets up a private investigation business in a small Texas town hoping to find some peace and maybe, himself. When a couple disappears and a bass fisherman turns up dead, he finds himself drawn into a web of toxic relationships:  MaryLou, a beautiful woman with a mysterious past; Junior, a failed farmer whose best intentions seem to always result in a dead body; Barry, a sociopathic dentist turned illegal toxic waste entrepreneur with visions of grandeur.  When the felon who killed his partner in Houston joins forces with Barry, Nick must not only stop the toxic waste dumping while finding his client’s missing daughter, but keep from being killed in the process. In the end, MaryLou’s dark secret will either save him or kill him — whichever comes first.

Since you’ve invited me to be shameless, I’ll share a wonderful compliment I was honored to receive from Pam Binder, who is the author of a NY Times bestselling anthology A Season in the Highlands and the President of the Pacific Northwest Writers Association.   “Tight suspense with wonderful laugh out loud moments.  Richard Hacker is a master storyteller.”

  1. I too, enjoy traveling like that. You miss too much when you are scurrying around trying to ‘see’ it all. Besides, that’s exhausting. Your book sounds superb, and congrats on the great review!
