Monday Motivation-Resist the Temptation

I’ve had a few aspiring authors tell me they were quitting because they’d figure out they’d never write as well as their favorite bestselling author.

My response has always been the same. Go ask them if they were great writers when they started out. I’ve assured them that the answer they’d get is no. In fact, some might even say, I was ready to throw in the towel.

Granted, there are some people who do begin as great writers, but that’s not the norm. Like any other talent, writing has to be perfected over time.

This week, if the only thing that’s stopping you from writing, or getting back to writing is the false assumption that you’re not as good as author A or B, know that’s the not the case.

Stop the temptation to compare yourself and WRITE!

  1. You said so much and didn’t have to draw things out to get such an important point across. I’ve heard several authors say something to the effect of comparing yourself to others is a quick way to kill your joy. I’m a firm believer that being the best version of “YOU” is the best way to become like those successful authors that you admire. And that some things just take time. Oftentimes, I remind myself that patience and persistence can be hard nouns to keep active, but a lot of things work themselves out with both. Time is one of those things we spend and don’t get back, so it’s important to make the most of what we’ve been given. Thanks for this wonderful post.
