It’s Tuesday and time for another guest and this week’s it’s Cynthia Terelst…
When did you begin writing?
I began writing at the age of 16, at which time I completed my first novel. I became distracted by boys, life and then motherhood, and my writing was put to the side. Nearly 30 years later I pulled my old manuscript out and rewrote it. Serendipity is a young adult novel, dealing with tough subjects such as mental illness, bullying and sexual harassment, with some romance. This novel is yet to be published as I would like to seek out a traditional publisher.
What’s been your biggest challenge?
As an indie author you are responsible for absolutely everything – writing, editing, choosing a cover designer, editor, proofreader, accounting, managing, building relationships, marketing. Of all of these, I found marketing the most difficult as there is a lot to learn. AS a new author I have no idea where to start. So far, I have done some blog visits and newsletter swaps. Today, I created my first Amazon ad. It was daunting, but I did it!
Why did you choose your genre?
I chose romance because I have always enjoyed reading it. As a teenager I read Sweet Dreams books. They were the go-to romance book for teenagers in those days. My writing is different to those books as I like to deal with real life issues, and my novels have a bit of steam.
What writing tips would you like to share?
I think the most important thing is to create a habit where you write every day. Creating a good habit will see projects completed and published. Another tip would be to keep learning and developing skills to improve your writing.
What are you currently working on?
My next novel, Let Sleeping Dogs Lie, is a second chance romance. It is currently in draft stage. I write all of my first drafts by hand, this has been done, and now I am typing it. I hope to send it to my first beta reader at the start of February.
What would you like to promote today?
I would like to promote my first novel, The Cat’s out of the Bag. This is a love story between Evie, a tortured heroine and Jesse, a billionaire trying to escape his empty life.
