Monday Writing Prompts-Away From Home-Part One

log-home-2225442_640

To finish out 2017, here’s part one of a two part writing prompt. For this week, your character decides he or she doesn’t want to spend the holidays at home. Maybe it’s because they’re on their own for the first time, or perhaps they want to avoid the fights that always break out between members of the family.

They book a quiet spot away from the maddening crowd but it’s not a restful or as secluded as they’d hoped.

For now, don’t worry about concluding the story because next week’s prompt will give your more ideas and direction for doing just that. Think of this one as a longer short story.

Have fun and happy writing.

Monday Writing Prompts-Cyber’s the Word

superhero-534120_640

Cyber’s the word for this week’s writing prompt.

It has to appear in your story at least five times. It could be part of the narration or even slipped into a line of dialogue.

Maybe your character is looking for Cyber Monday deals, committing a cyber crime or even preventing one. Perhaps they’re meeting someone for the first time in cyberspace. Mystery, romance, sci-fi…the choice is yours.

Have fun and happy writing.

Monday Writing Prompts-Black Friday Sales

black-friday-1898111_640

I couldn’t let this one go by…Friday is Black Friday so the topic of this week’s prompt is your character is looking for a bargain on this busiest shopping day of the year.

Does she or he find what they’re looking for? Do they get a bargain? How willing are they to do just about anything to snag a deal?

Does someone else snap up the bargain before them?

Or maybe something else catches their eye.

Are they shopping in a store or even online?

Have fun and happy writing.

Monday Writing Prompts-Let’s Dance

dance-me-to-the-end-of-love-2915150_640

Holiday season is just around the corner and for your character that means, party season too. He or she would love to join in when the music starts and people head to the dance floor but they don’t want to look foolish.

The solution, take a few dance classes and that’s what your short story should focus on.

What happens when they attend their first class? Do they discover they really have a talent for it? No talent whatsoever? Do they meet someone there? Do they run into someone they know?

Have fun and happy writing.

Monday Writing Prompts-NaNoWriMo Participant

cup-2884023_640

I thought it might be fun to write a short story based on what’s happening right now…NaNoWriMo.

Your character is taking part for the first time and decides to venture into a local coffee shop to write at least 2,000 words in an hour.

Do they achieve their goal? Like any great story they should have something or someone that gets in their way.

What stops them from reaching their goal and how do they react to it?

Have fun and happy writing.

Monday Writing Prompts-Scared

It’s almost Halloween so you’ve probably guessed the focus of this week’s prompt.

It’s all about being scared.

It doesn’t have to be horror story scary but your character needs to face something that increases their heart rate. It could be a visit to the dentist, taking a driving test, or even asking for a pay increase at work.

Of course you could turn it into more of a true horror story if you want.

Lots you can do with this one so have fun and happy writing.

Monday Writing Prompts-Comfort Zone

break-2822434_640

This week’s prompt focuses on a character who decides to take a chance and step outside their comfort zone.

Maybe they always take the same route to work and decide to go on the freeway.

Perhaps they never go to new restaurants and decide to take a chance on the one that’s just opened in town.

Or it could be that your character finally decides to approach the man or woman they’ve seen on the bus or train every morning for the last year.

Lots you can do with this one so have fun and happy writing.

Monday Writing Prompts-Fear of Heights

architecture-2256489_640

This prompt zeroes in on fear, specifically a fear of heights. That’s what your character has to deal with. Maybe they need to go into this building for an important job interview. Perhaps they even get a job on the top floor. Maybe they’re meeting a date at the restaurant on the top floor.

How does your character deal with their fear of heights? Do they conquer their fear or will your ending be unresolved?

Have fun and happy writing.
