Friday Ramblings From An Author-Should I Be Writing a Vampire Story?

Ever wonder if the universe reaches out to us authors and tells us what to write?

I have a tale to share with you. Let me start by saying you never know what creature will put in an appearance in the yard or house.

I woke up Thursday morning, walked out to the living room, flicked on the light and saw a black winged creature fly from one corner over to the other side of the room.

At first, I thought it was a bird but then something told me BAT. Yikes! Worst still it had flown into the area of the living room above the couch where my laptop was sitting. More Yikes! A very brave search during daytime hours yielded nothing. Not even a small sign that they’d been a bat.

Had my author’s brain taken over and had I imagined I’d seen a bat?

Nope, wasn’t the case, the bat put in an encore appearance in the bedroom around 9 p.m, while I was watching Netflix on my iPad….and wait for it, guess what I was watching, Gotham no less!

Ever seen a bat up close? First time I had, creepy is all I can say, rubbery with flapping wings…yes, I know as a writer I should be able to think of something more descriptive.

City girl instinct told me run, run fast, retreat and as you do, make sure the door is shut. And yes, the story ends well as a very nice man from animal control stopped by, captured it (it was hanging on the closet door) and relocated the bat….hopefully it knows it was part of a bat witness relocation program.

When I returned to the room, Gotham was still playing and I wondered if the bat had enjoyed watching it as it had flown around the room or even caught onto the coincidence of it putting in an appearance while a show about batman as a teenager was playing.

Apart from the bat drama, the rest of the week has been low key. I got about another 7,000 words written on my WIP. I also began overhauling my site and in the fall, hope to get classes gradually uploaded there.

Hopefully, my weekend will be drama (and bat free).

Have a good week and happy writing to all.
