Authorship, Publishing, Books and More

Tuesday Guest Blogger-Alice Renaud

Say hello to this week’s guest blogger, Alice Renaud…

When did you begin writing?

When I was 14, and on holiday in the South of France, I began to write an epic fantasy story about a land that the sea covers entirely once every thousand years. There was a boy, and a wizard… and a book with secrets that would turn their world outside down… and an immortal emperor… It never got published, but some elements of the story have made their way into my fantasy romance series Sea of Love, and the new series I’m working on now, Conjuring Love.

What’s been your biggest challenge?

Initially, to write something that I enjoyed writing, and that was good enough to get published. It took me 33 years to get my first short story published in a magazine, and another 11 years for my first novel, “A Merman’s Choice,” to be released.

Why did you choose your genre?
I’ve always loved fantasy. My favourite authors are Tolkien, Terry Pratchett, Ursula Le Guin and Robin Hobb. I’m also a romantic at heart, so fantasy romance is what I want to write.
What writing tips would you like to share?
It’s essential for new authors to get feedback on their work, through writing workshops, critique circles and critique partners, beta readers… I recommend the online writing classes run by Romance Writers of America.
What are you currently working on?
I have started writing “How to Win a Sea-Witch”, the first book in my new series “Conjuring Love”. It is based on the short story “The Sweetest Magic of All”, which was published in the BVS Mystic Desire paranormal romance anthology in October 2019. An apprentice witch and a hot warlock go back in time to find a magical amulet… but they find more than they bargained for!
What would you like to promote today?

My fantasy romance series Sea of Love is inspired by Welsh legends and tells the stories of three young merfolk, Yann Benetynn, Rob Regor, and Caltha Dooran. They fall in love with humans, in defiance of the laws of their people, and have to find a way to true love and lasting happiness through all the obstacles life, family and monsters throw in their path. The stories can be read independently.

Book 2 in the Sea of Love series, Music for a Merman, is out now. Book 3, Mermaids Marry in Green, will be released later this year by Black Velvet Seductions.
