Food For Thought

Say hello to Kryssie Fortune, today’s guest blogger, who proves an added bonus to writing a book is researching it…yes, you never know what you’ll uncover…

We all love a good meal, Britain’s Prince Regent – later George IV –more than most.

The press pilloried the Prince Regent for his obesity and huge appetite.

When researching my latest Regency Romance, I looked at food and drink. Bearing in mind that Britain was at war with Napoleon Bonaparte at the time, what did the Prince regent do?

He stole Napoleon’s chef – the renowned Marie Antoine Careme.

One menu featured eight soups, from consommé to curried chicken. He followed that by eight fish courses including sturgeon and turbot. Next came forty, yes forty different entrees. Chicken, lamb, game, rabbit and even pigeon featured on the list.

The gluttony didn’t stop there.

Eight great pieces followed. These were fancy dishes built around turkey, veal, partridge, and beef. Are you full yet, because there eight roasts to go. They’re followed by thirty-two different deserts. Then, rather than send you home hungry, the cook had created roast apple soufflés, vanilla soufflés and fondues.

I feel full just thinking about all that.

So, what did the poor eat?

Stale Bread.

Wheat was in short supply, so to conserve it the government made it illegal for bakeries to sell fresh bread. They had to keep it a day first. That made it more filling but far less appetizing. It also cut down the amount people ate.

About Kryssie-

Kryssie Fortune writes the sort of hot sexy books she loves to read. If she can sneak a dragon into her paranormal books she will. Her paranormal heroes are muscular werewolves, arrogant Fae, or BDSM loving dragons.

Kryssie likes her contemporary heroes ex-military and dominant. Her heroines are kick ass females who can hold their own against whatever life – or Kryssie – throws at them.

Her pet hates are unhappy endings, and a series that end on a cliff hanger.

Her books are all stand alone even when part of series. Plot always comes before sex, but when her heroines and heroes get together, the sex is explosive and explicit. One review called it downright sensual. She fell in love with Regency romances while reading Georgette Heyer.
