Heard of something called a ghostwriter and wondered what that means?
Basically, they write for other people. You could be hired by a business person who has a brilliant idea for a book but hasn’t got the time or talent to write it themselves. Could be someone needing to give a speech but doesn’t know where to start or what to say. Even a publisher who wants to print a book on a particular topic and needs it asap.
Sound like something you’d be interested in?
While I haven’t done any ghostwriting myself, while I was freelancing I did network with a bunch of writers who regularly did ghostwriting gigs. I have to admit, the money they made did often make me think, why don’t I give this a try?
If you’re wondering why you should consider it, here are my top four reasons to at least look into it-
You Get Paid No Matter What
Whether you publish traditionally or self-publish, there’s always the risk that you’ll never get paid for all the hours and hard work you put into your project, be it fiction or non-fiction. However, that’s not the case when you’re the ghostwriter. Even if the author doesn’t make a penny from the book, you still get paid and paid up front.
More Money
Ghostwriters can make more money if they pick an in-demand niche. In fact, choose one where you already have some experience or one that doesn’t attract lots of people and you can earn a lot more money than your fellow writers.
Love What You Do
Pick a niche that fascinates or interests you and it won’t seem like work. Say for example you love writing about business or tech, choose that as your niche. Not only will the words flow faster but the money probably will too and at the same time you’ll be writing about something you love. I’d call that win-win.
Strengthen Your Writing
Writing all day and writing on different topics, even penning different genres can only do one thing and that’s make you a stronger, better writer. Similar to a long distance runner in training, you’ll be honing your skill. You’ll also learn to meet deadlines and work with editors which are all valuable skills to have in the highly competitive world of writing.
