Say hello to today’s guest blogger, Susan Royal who shares with us how her writing career got started…
Ever since I was a child, I’ve been hooked on storytelling and becoming a writer. I still have my first attempt. A book made out of ruled notebook pages and bound with red ribbon, written and illustrated in pencil. I couldn’t have been more than five years old at the time.
My desire to become a writer went hand in hand with the love of words and the way they can make a scene come alive. Like a lot of people, I didn’t get serious about it until later in life. I finally decided if I was ever going to fulfill my dream, I needed to write something and finish it. I joined an online critique group. I wrote, revised, edited, and submitted and eventually published my first book. A time travel romance.
Four books later, I’m still writing. But I’m not churning out a book a year like anymore. There’ve been big changes in my life. And I’ve tried a lot of new things. Some have worked. Some haven’t. Maybe the most important thing I’ve learned is this.
Every writer has a unique style. Learning new techniques are invaluable, but only if they don’t stifle your creativity. I struggled to change because I thought it would make me more productive and lost my perspective in the process. Don’t stop improving, but don’t stop doing what works for you.
Above all, this is what I want for my readers. Lose yourself in my story. Start the first page, asking “what if?” and end it wondering “why not?”
