First up was a mystery, then a romance novel, so I thought it was time for some non-fiction. Book three on my summer reading list is A Green and Pleasant Land-How England’s Gardeners Fought the Second World War by Ursula Buchan.
I chose this one for several reasons. Gardening is one of my hobbies and I’m trying my hand at growing vegetables for the first time this year. Second reason, it’s not only about gardening but about history too. And being a Brit, it’s part of my own history. I remember hearing about my great grandparents growing vegetables in their backyards and on allotments when food supplies dwindled as the war continued. I also remember hearing about my great grandmother adding banana flavoring to parsnips when bananas became a distant memory for them. So I’m hoping this one will entertain as well as educate me.
