I hadn’t realized we’re over the half way point of October until today. Just ten days left and it’s November. If you’re an author, I don’t have to tell you what that means.
It’s NaNoWriMo time again.
Lots of you have e-mailed and asked if I’m taking part this year. No, I’m not and that’s because of two things. One, I’m teaching two boot camps and one is a two week synopsis class which is usually the busiest. Two, I need the next four weeks to finish my WIP and get it ready for a December release.
Lots of you have told me, this year, you’re going to do it and you’re going to finish strong. I know you can do it but thought I’d share a few tips with you to get you ready for Nov 1st.
Start Now
I made the mistake of trying to write the first word of the first chapter on day one of the challenge. Don’t do it.
Start your book now.
Starting on day one puts too much pressure on you. Pressure is the last thing you need.
Find a Nook
If you’re anything like me, I find I’m most productive in a certain spot in the house. For me, it’s the couch with the main window behind me so I’m not tempted to look outside to see what’s happening. Find your perfect nook this week.
Make an Appointment
This is something I discovered that helped me get over my ten year writing break. I made an appointment to write. Same time each day. When the clock rolled around to 5 p.m. it was writing time and nothing else.
Refreshments and Snacks
Another thing that helps is having ten minute breaks every hour you write. Get something to drink and eat. Oftentimes we get hungry which makes us tired and we turn off the laptop. The break allows you to write longer.
Test Run
Nothing like having a test run before day one. Pretend it is day one and see how you do. Learn from anything you figure out like distractions, aches and pains through sitting for a certain amount of time. Don’t wait for surprises on the first day.
Lots more NaNoWriMo tips coming soon!
